A warning control unit determines the degree of focus of a predetermined area in the photographed image in accordance with the focus scores for the respective areas, and issues a warning instruction in accordance with a result of the determination. The warning is issued by displaying the warning, outputting a warning sound, vibrating, or emitting light, for example. As the degree of focus is determined in accordance with the focus scores, neither blurring nor defocusing is caused, and the user can be prompted to check the degree of focus. The present technology can be applied to digital still cameras.
