The vehicle transmission includes three simple planetary gear sets and one compound planetary gear set or includes five simple planetary gear sets. A shifting operation is performed by changing speed and direction of rotation of gears in a manner of selectively connecting and disconnecting rotary elements of the gear sets and a plurality of friction members. The vehicle transmission provides ten or more forward speed ratios and one or more reverse speed ratios through this shifting operation.
