The composition for a secondary battery porous membrane contains inorganic oxide particles X, a metal hydroxide Y, a binder, and water. The metal hydroxide Y is a divalent or trivalent hydroxide, and is contained in an amount of at least 0.001 parts by mass and not more than 10 parts by mass per 100 parts by mass of the inorganic oxide particles X.
