A three dimensional volume rendering system includes a logic device configured to communicate with a user interface and receive volume data from a volume data source. The logic device is configured to render a three dimensional) representation of the volume data on a display of the user interface according to a view perspective, render an indicator key on a first two dimensional plane overlaid in the 3D representation, detect a change condition, and rotate the indicator key about a rotational axis in response to the detected change condition.
