The method described herein comprises: at a client, in response to receiving an instruction for restoring a set of files on a virtual machine from a backup server, obtaining a backup of a set of files from the backup server; transmitting information about the backup and a file downloading application to the virtual machine; causing the file downloading application to be executed on the virtual machine by transmitting an instruction for executing the file downloading application to the virtual machine, such that the virtual machine downloads the backup from the client based on the information about the backup.
