The keratoprosthesis apparatus includes a circular backplate including a central aperture extending through the backplate from a face of the backplate to a posterior surface of the backplate. The circular backplate has a dome shape and comprises a plurality of spaced apart elongated slits extending radially outwardly from a central portion of the backplate. The plurality of spaced apart elongated slits surround the central aperture and extending through the backplate from the face of the backplate to the posterior of the backplate.
