A system that incorporates teachings of the subject disclosure may include, for example, adjusting a matching network utilizing a weighted tuning state determined according to an application of a first weighting factor to multiple tuning states based on enhancing performance associated with different types of operation, including transmit, receive, and duplex operation. A weighted reference metric is determined based on a second weighting factor and first, second and third reference metrics selected from first, second and third groups of reference metrics based on the enhancing performance associated with the different types of operation. The tuning is continued utilizing the weighted tuning state, responsive to a first determination that a first performance metric satisfies a first threshold according to a comparison of the first performance metric to the weighted reference metric.
