A method for detecting base stations is shown comprising steps of determining an assumed primary synchronization signal with the strongest peak in a signal set; finding an associated secondary synchronization signal; shifting the assumed primary synchronization signal and the secondary synchronization signal at the same point and time; subtracting the signals from one another obtaining a residual signal; and determining whether a peak of the residual signal is present which is larger than a predetermined threshold.
