Aspects of the subject disclosure may include, for example, a method in which a processing system obtains geolocation information for an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and for a cell of a terrestrial communication network. The system estimates a distance between the UAV and the cell, calculates an expected receive (RX) power for a signal transmitted from the UAV to the cell, and compares the expected RX power with a threshold power to determine whether the cell is a suitable target cell for a communications handover procedure for the UAV.
