Described herein are methods and systems for using an alkaloid, such as manzamine A, for anti-proliferative effects at relatively low and non-cytotoxic concentrations (up to 4 μM) wherein manzamine A blocks cell cycle progression in cervical cancer cell lines and regulates cell cycle-related genes, including restoration of p21 and p53 expression inducing apoptosis.
