Metalic nickel and finely divided nickel phosphate supported on an inert carrier wherein the total nickel is from 12 to 450* % by weight, based on total weight of catalyst, the phosphate (PO4) content is from 0.60 to 23 percent by weight, based on the total weight of catalyst, and the ratio of total nickel to phosphorus is greater than 2.84.
