The reservoir substrate is a generally planar member having a plurality of recesses or dimples, and can include a plurality of drain apertures in land areas intermediate the dimples. The composite includes a water retention layer, a root barrier layer and a multitude of projecting loops, wherein a growing medium and vegetation overlie and intertwine with the projecting loops.
