A method for matching remittances to transactions is disclosed. The system and method also matches remittances to particular transactions with relaxed sensitivity to where identifying markers may be placed on a remittance and is resistant to typographical data entry errors. Further, the system and method is flexible with regards to handling various kinds of information that can result in accurate, precise matching without discarding or overlooking such information.
