In certain exemplary implementations the invention provides an at least partially transparent, pliable gel having an optical property, such as brightness or color, and a circuit for delivering electromagnetic radiation to the gel to modify the optical property. Under certain conditions, modifying the optical property can stimulate a user's visual and other senses to help improve cognitive development and functionality.
