The apparatus identifies whether an optical disc is a single-layer recording medium having one recording layer, or a multilayer recording medium having a plurality of recording layers, and sets a control range (movable range) of an objective lens on the basis of the identification result. When the optical disc is identified as a multilayer recording medium, the control range of the objective lens is set to be smaller than that for a single-layer recording medium. Further, the control range of the objective lens is set for each of the recording layers of the optical disc.
