The ink jet recording medium has a substrate and an ink receiving layer provided on at least one surface of the substrate. The ink receiving layer contains a compound represented by the general formula (1): wherein R1, R2 and R3 are individually a linear or branched alkyl group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, with the proviso that at least one of R1, R2 and R3 has a hydroxyl group.
