Video data, audio data reproducible in accordance with the video data, and information that indicates whether the video data and the audio data have been recorded as a multiplexed file or as independent files are read from the recording medium. The read video data and audio data are reproduced in accordance with the read information. When the information indicates that the video data and the audio data have been recorded as a multiplexed file on the recording medium, still pictures derived from the video data are reproduced in synchronization with the audio data. When the information indicates that the video data and the audio data have been recorded as independent files on the recording medium, the still pictures derived from the video data are reproduced without being in synchronization with the audio data.
