The pouch type secondary battery includes an electrode assembly including first and second electrode plates having opposite electrical polarities and a first separator between the first and second electrode plates; and a safety member including a first conductive plate located on an outside of the electrode assembly and electrically connected to the first electrode plate, a second conductive plate located on an outside of the first conductive plate and electrically connected to the second electrode plate, and an insulating plate between the first and second conductive plates for insulating the first and second conductive plates from each other, and the first conductive plate has a puncture strength that is greater than a puncture strength of the second conductive plate.
