A communication system transmitter comprises an adaptive error correction encoder. The adaptive error correction encoder is configured to generate a plurality of error correction frames with each such error correction frame comprising a plurality of data packets and one or more error correction packets. A given one of the error correction packets comprises information relating to the plurality of data packets of its corresponding frame and additional information relating to a different one of the error correction frames. The additional information may be inserted into a header of the given error correction packet, and may comprise a next frame sequence number indicator and a corresponding next frame mask value for a subsequent one of the error correction frames.
