The conveying unit is configured to convey a sheet in a conveying direction at a first velocity. The reading unit is configured to read the sheet at a reading position. The detecting unit is configured to detect the sheet at a detection position upstream of the reading position in the conveying direction. The controller is configured to control the conveying unit to initiate conveyance of sheet, and configured to control the reading unit to start reading the sheet when the sheet is detected. The controller controls the conveying unit to convey the sheet at a second velocity slower than the first velocity when the sheet is not detected after a prescribed period of time has elapsed since the conveying unit initiates the conveyance of sheet.
