A terminal to control an application based on a handwriting input includes a determination unit to recognize a handwriting input received on a touch panel of the terminal, and to determine a symbol corresponding to the handwriting input; and a processor configured to select an application capable of being associated with the symbol, and to associate the symbol with a function of the application.
