A steering system of a vehicle includes a steering wheel, a steerable wheel mechanically decoupled from the steering wheel, a steering actuator for setting a rotational position of the steering wheel, a wheel steering drive for steering of the steerable wheel, and a controller for controlling the wheel steering drive and the steering wheel actuator. When the ignition is switched off, the steering wheel is moved with the steering wheel actuator automatically into a neutral position that is independent of a wheel angle of the steerable wheel.
