An accumulating operation for accumulating signal charges in the photoelectric conversion unit and a charge removing operation for removing the signal charges from the photoelectric conversion unit are alternately executed in accordance with a voltage applied between the first and second electrodes, and the charge removing operation is executed multiple times between a first accumulating operation and a second accumulating operation which is executed after the first accumulating operation.
