A setting unit sets, based on a user's operation, a display range for displaying within a range of brightness possibly taken by the input image data, and reference brightness that is an upper limit of brightness of a display unit. A generation unit generates display image data by converting gradation characteristics of the input image data based on the display. The brightness of the display unit is controlled based on the reference brightness. A notification unit performs first notification processing when the display unit is able to display an image based on the display image data with brightness of the input image data, and second notification processing when the display unit is not able to so display the image, based on the display range, the reference brightness, and the input brightness information.
