Abstract: PURPOSE: A method for controlling image contrast for a local dimming backlight and apparatus thereof is provided to make the configuration of hardware by using a histogram extension method of only some pixels of the sub block. CONSTITUTION: In a method for controlling image contrast for a local dimming backlight and apparatus thereof, an RGB image is transformed to a Y-Cb-Cr image(S100). A luminance component is extracted from the Y-Cb-Cr image(S102). The whole brightness average value of the Y-Cb-Cr image is calculated. The size of the Y-Cb-Cr image is portioned to a sub block size(S104). A brightness average value and standard deviation information at each sub block are calculated(S106).
