Abstract: A target detection system and method for reducing energy consumption are provided to maintain effectively a sensor network for a long time by lengthening the lifespan of sensors. Multiple boundary sensor nodes(10) are located at edges of a cluster(100). Multiple non-boundary sensor nodes(20) refer to remaining sensor nodes excluding the multiple boundary sensor(10) nodes within the cluster(100). A cluster head(30) manages the multiple sensor nodes(10,20) within the cluster, and receives a report about a detected target. The multiple non-boundary sensor nodes(20) are maintained in an inactive state until the target is detected, and the multiple boundary sensor nodes(10) are maintained in an active state one by one by turns to detect the target that enters into the cluster.
