    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a force measurement system as a part of a touch pad input device.SOLUTION: A force imaging touch pad includes a first group and a second group of conductive traces which are separated by a spring film. When force is applied, the spring film deforms to move the two groups of traces closer to each other. Change of a result of mutual capacitance is used to generate an image showing a quantity or strength of the applied force. A combined position-force imaging touch pad includes two groups of drive traces, one group of sense traces, and the spring film. During operation, one of the drive trace is used in combination with the group of sense traces to generate an image of a place where one or a plurality of bodies come into contact with a touch pad. The second group of drive traces are used in combination with the sense trace and the spring film to generate an image of strength, i.e. magnitude of the applied force.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a force measuring system as a part of a touch pad input device. SOLUTION: A force imaging touch pad includes first and second sets of conductive traces separated by a spring membrane. When a force is applied, the spring membrane is deformed moving the two sets of traces closer together. Resulting change in mutual capacitance is used to generate an image indicative of an amount or intensity of the applied force. A combined location and force imaging touch pad includes two sets of drive traces, one set of sense traces, and the spring membrane.
