Abstract:
THE PRESENT INVENTION RELATES TO COATING COMPOSITONS WHICH MAY BE DEPOSITED ONTO CATHODES AND ARE THUS SUITABLE FOR ELECTROCOATING PROCESSES. THE COMPOSITIONS COMPRISE COPOLYMERS CONTAINING POLYMERIZED UNITS OF (1) AT LEAST ONE NITROGEN-BASIC OLEFINICALLY UNSATURATED COMPOUND, (2) 3A,4,5,6,7A-HEXAHYDRO-4,7-METHANOINDENYL ACRYLATE-5 OR METHACRYLATE-5, (3) AT LEAST ONE COPOLYMERIZABLE OLEFINICALLY UNSATURATED DERIVATIVE OF AT LEAST ONE OXA-ALCOHOL AND, IF DESIRED, (4) FURTHER COPOLYMERIZABLE OLEFINICALLY UNSATURATED MONOMERS, WHICH COPOLYMERS ARE USED FOR ELECTROCOATING IN AQUEOUS SOLUTION OR DISPERSION AT LEAST PARTLY IN THE FORM OF SALTS OF WATER-SOLUBLE ACIDS. THE COMPOSITIONS OF THE INVENTION ARE SUITABLE FOR THE PRODUCTION OF DURABLE COATINGS ON METAL PARTS.

[Also in Division C7] A solution of a copolymer for cathodic deposition on a conducting substrate comprises on a weight basis a copolymer prepared by solution polymerization of 10 parts N-1-(N 1 :N 1 - dimethylamino)-propyl-(3)-amide of acrylic acid, 20 parts N-2-oxa-4-methylpentylamide of methacrylic acid, 20 parts methyl methacrylate, and 50 parts tert-butyl acrylate in 100 parts of a 1: 1 mixture of n-butanol and p-xylene, diluted with water to a solids content of 8 % and adjusted to pH 6 with acetic acid. Another composition suitable for cathodic deposition comprises a copolymer prepared by solution polymerization of 10 parts N-1-(N 1 :N 1 - dimethylamino)-propyl-(3)-amide of acrylic acid, 5 parts acrylamide, 40 parts n-butyl acrylate, 35 parts tert-butyl acrylate, and 10 parts 4- hydroxybutyl acrylate in 100 parts of a 1: 1 mixture of n-butanol and p-xylene to which copolymer is added 0À5 mole acetic acid per mole of the substituted acrylic acid amide, the resultant salt being admixed in a solids ratio of 90: 10 with a water-soluble melamine-formaldehyde resin partly etherified with methanol and the mixture being diluted with water, 13 parts TiO 2 pigment added and the resultant mix homogenized by ball-milling, followed by dilution with water to 8% solids content. A further suitable copolymer salt is produced from maleic acid and a copolymer prepared by copolymerization of 3 parts N- aminoethyl acrylamide, 8 parts N: N-di-(N 1 :N 1 -diethylamino)ethylamide of acrylic acid, 3 parts N- ethyl methacrylamide. 4 parts N-methylol methacrylamide, 35 parts styrene, 30 parts n-butyl acrylate, 10 parts tert-butyl acrylate, 5 parts acrylonitrile, and 3 parts N-vinylimidazole.
