Abstract: Tyre cords are made of linear polyamides containing as stabilizer, between 0.01 and 5% by weight of a condensation product of formaldehyde and one or more monophenols having the general formula in which R1 is an alkyl group having 1 to 12 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl group having 6 to 8 carbon atoms, an aralkyl group having 7 to 10 carbon atoms or an aryl group and R2 is hydrogen, an alkyl group having 1 to 12 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl group having 6 to 8 carbon atoms, an aralkyl group having 7 to 10 carbon atoms or an aryl group. Specified monophenols are p-tertiary butyl phenol, p-isopropylphenol, diisopropylphenol, p - cyclo-octylphenol, p - cyclo-hexylphenol, p-phenylphenol, p-heptylphenol, p-octylphenol, p-dodecylphenol, o-methyl-p-tertiary-butyl phenol and 2-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-2-phenyl propane. Specified linear polyamides are those derived from adipic acid and xylylene or hexamethylene diamine, pyrrolidone, piperidone, #z-caprolactam, caprylolactam, dodecylolactam and undecylolactam. The stabilizers may be added to the polyamide-forming monomers or mixed with the polyamides. In the examples: (1) #z-caprolactam is polymerized in the presence of polymers made from formaldehyde and (a) p-t.-butylphenol, (b) p-dodecylphenol, (c) p-isoheptylphenol, (d) p-hydroxydiphenyl, (e) isopropylphenol, (f) cyclo-octylphenol, and (g) n-octylphenol; (2) poly-#z-caprolactam is mixed with a formaldehyde-p-cyclo-hexylphenol condensate; (3) polyhexamethylene adipamide is mixed with a formaldehyde-p-hydroxydiphenyl condensate and (4) polycaprylolactam is mixed with a formaldehyde-p-hydroxydiphenyl condensate, the resultant stabilized polyamides being spun into filaments from which tyre cords are made.
