    Abstract: AIR OXIDATION OF ALKYL-SUBSTITUTED HYDROQUINONES IN THE PRESENCE OF HEAVY METAL SALTS AS CATALYSTS IN A LIQUID MIXED PHASE CONSISTING OF AN AQUEOUS PHASE AND AN ORGANIC PHASE. THE AQUEOUS PHASE CONTAINS DISSOLVED CATALYST AND ADDITIVES FOR SETTING UP A PH BELOW 7, AND THE ORGANIC PHASE IS A SELECTIVE SOLVENT FOR THE ALKYL-SUBSTITUTED PBENZOQUINONE FORMED IN THE OXIDATION. THE PROCESS ENABLES 2,3,6-TRIMETHYLHYDROQUINONE, AN IMPORTANT INTERMEDIATE IN THE SYNTHESIS OF VITMIN E, TO BE SEPARATED FROM MIXTURES OF METHYL-SUBSTITUTED HYDROQUINONES.
