    Abstract: Aromatic condensn. prods. of formula (Ia) and (Ib) are new. In the formulae, the dotted lines indicate that the naphthalene or perylene units may be bonded together by single or double bonds; R1 and R2 = H, 1-12C alkyl, 3-8C cycloalkyl, phenyl or benzyl; m = 1-500 and n = 0-500. Derivs. of these rendered conductive by doping with oxidising or reducing substances or by anodic oxidn. at 0.05-100 mA/cm2 are also claimed. USE/ADVANTAGE - The polymers (Ia) and (Ib) are stable at very high temps. and are soluble in organic solvents. By doping with oxidising substances, e.g. AsF5, SbF5, Br, I, TiCl4, solns. or suspension of metal halides e.g. FeCl3, ZrCl4 and AlCl3 in nitromethane, F-contg. nitrogen oxide cpds. in nitromethane/methylene chloride, transition metal halides and reducing substances, etc.; and anodic oxidn. using an electrolyte soln. comprising a soln. or suspension of a conductive salt e.g. with an alkali(ne earth) metal cation and an (in)organic anion such as BF4, AsF6, SbF6, SbCl6, perchlorate, sulphate, bisulphate, sulphonate, benzenesulphonate or benzoate, electrically conductive derivs. are obtd. The aromatic condensn. prods. (Ia) and (Ib) are useful heat insulators, e.g. as support substances for heating elements. The doped derivs. with increased electrical conductivity are useful in the mfr. of electrodes.

    Abstract: New polybenzoid systems (I) are obtd. by thermal treatment of biphenylene cpds. of the formula R1-Z-R2 (IIA) or bisbenzocyclobuta(1,2-a:2',1'-d)benzene cpds. of the formula R3-Z'-R5 at 100-1000 deg.C and 10 power(-6) to 1000 bar.     Abstract: New copolymers (I) with naphthylene units are of the formula (I) where a, b and n = 1-100000; X = H, 1-12C alkyl, 5-12C cycloalkyl, 6-18C aryl, pyrrolyl or thienyl; A and B = gps. obtd. by oligo- or polymerisation of 2-4C alkenes, 4-5C conjugated dienes, styrene, alpha-methyl-styrene, phenols di-substd. in the 2- and 6-positions by 1-4C alkyl or phenyl gps., ethylene oxide or propylene oxide or by reactng aromatic dihalogen cpds. with aromatic di-OH cpds. or their mxits.     Abstract: Polymeric materials contg. structural units of formula (I) are new. In formula, n = 1-1000. (I) are prepd. by Diels-Alder condensn. of tetramethylene cyclooctane (II) with benzoquinone (III) to form a condensate which is then treated with FeCl3 to convert it back into a benzoquinone form, and opt. repeating the process with addn. of (II) or (III). USE/ADVANTAGE - The (I) are converted into electrically conductive materials by addn. with exclusion of moisture of an effective amt. of a cpd. chosen from AsF5, SbF5, an aromatic sulphonic acid- or nitro-cpd., an anhydrous fluorocarboxylic acid or an anhydrous mineral acid and/or iodine. The electrically conductive polycondensates are useful antistatic additives for polymers, for prodn. of solar cells, for conversion and fixing of radiation, for prodn. of electric and magnetic switches, and for prodn. of electrodes. Addn. of a strong Lewis acid to the polycondensate gives p-conductors.
