Abstract: An artificial limb is made from an expanded polyamide Preferred polyamides are those made by the polymerization of lactams having five to thirteen ring members in the presence of activators such as substituted ureas or guanidines and catalysts such as alkali metal lactamates. The expanded materials preferably have a density of 250 to 400 gm./l. and may be made by introducing a lactam, e.g. e -caprolactam, and a foaming agent into a shaped mould, adding the activator and catalyst and heating, e.g. to 170 DEG C.ALSO:Arm, leg or hand prostheses are made from an expanded polyamide. In the Example, the thigh portion of a leg protheses is made by introducing a lactam and a foaming agent into a mould having the shape of the limb, adding the catalyst, an alkali metal lactamate, and an activator, a substituted urea. The mould is held at 170 DEG C while polymerisation and foaming takes place. The expanded polyamides preferably have a density of 250 to 400 gm/l. The product may be polished, milled, sawn or drilled.
