Abstract: Methine and azamethine dyes based on trifluoromethyl-substituted 5-membered heterocycles are new. Dyes of formula Q -X=Het (I) are claimed, where: X = CH or N; Q = group of formula (IIA) to (IIM): Het = two-valent radical of formula (III) or (IV): n = 0 or 1; Z = H; 1-13C alkyl optionally interrupted with 1-3 oxygens; 1-4C alkoxy, 1-4C alkylsulfonylamino, mono- or di-alkylaminosulfonyl; -NHCOZ or NHCO2Z ; Z = H, 1-4C alkyl(oxy); Z , Z = H; 1-13C alkyl optionally interrupted with 1-3 oxygens; 3-4C alkenyl; 5-7C cycloalkyl, phenyl or tolyl or together with the linking nitrogen form a 5 or 6 membered heterocycle with or without further heteroatoms; Z = H or 1-4C alkyl; Z = H; halogen; 1-3C alkyl; optionally substituted phenyl or benzyl; 5-7C cycloalkyl; thienyl; hydroxyl; 1-4C alkoxy or alkylthio; 1-13C monoalkylamino; Z = H, 1-13C alkyl, optionally substituted phenyl, cyano or 1-13C alkoxycarbonyl; Z = phenyl, benzyl, tolyl, Y = O, S, imino, 1-4C alkylimino, optionally substituted phenylimino or an acidic -CH compound radical; A = N or a radical C-U; U = H; 1-13C alkyl optionally interrupted with 1-3 oxygens; halogen, cyano or 1-13C alkoxycarbonyl; E = O, S, Se, imino, 1-4C alkylimino or optionally substituted phenylimino. Independent claims are included for: (1) A process of transferring dyes from a support to a polymer coated paper by diffusion or sublimation with the aid of an energy source. On the support are located one or more dyes of formula Q -X=Het (IA); (2) A process for dyeing or printing synthetic materials using (IA). Q = five or six membered carbocyclic or heterocyclic radical.
