Palladium values are extracted from an aqueous solution containing them by a method of liquid/liquid extraction using an amine which contains at least six carbon atoms per nitrogen atom, or solution of such amine in an organic solvent, separating the amine phase and reextracting the Pd values with an aqueous acid solution, the amount and/or the concentration of the aqueous acid being greater than in the original solution so that the activity of PO 2+ in said aqueous acid is less than in the original solution. The inert solvent for the amine preferably has little or no miscibility with water. The original aqueous solution may be acid and may have been obtained in the process for the production of glyoxal by oxidizing ethylene in which Pd is a catalyst. Suitable aqueous acids for the re-extraction are given as HC1, H 2 SO 4 , H 3 PO 4 and HNO 3 , but palladium iodide, bromide, chloride, sulphate and nitrate are recorded as being obtained by the process, although nitric acid is the preferred acid and the obtaining of solutions of Pd in nitric acid is exemplified. Lists of suitable amines and inert solvents are given in the Specification.

Abstract: 1,133,841. Production of phenylhydrazine. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 18 March, 1966 [20 March, 1965], No. 11918/66. Heading C2C. Phenylhydrazine or salts thereof are obtained by the reduction of phenyl diazonium salts by means of sulphurous acid or salts thereof in aqueous medium wherein the reaction is commenced at from - 5‹ to + 50‹ C. and substantially an alkali or alkaline earth metal hydrogen sulphite (i.e. which may contain sulphurous acid or sulphite) is used as reducing agent in at least a 30 mole per cent stoichiometric excess and the reaction is completed by maintaining the reaction mixture at a higher temperature in the range of from 10‹ to 150‹ C. The sulphite solution preferably does not contain more than 25 mole per cent of free sulphurous acid or 60 mole per cent of sulphite (based on hydrogen sulphite) and the reduction is completed by maintaining the reactive mixture at 10‹ to 150‹ C., optionally with the addition of a mineral acid. The process may be effected batchwise or continuously, in the latter case the sulphur dioxide liberated during the reaction being absorbed, e.g. in caustic soda solution, and the sulphite and hydrogen sulphite solution thus formed may be recycled.

Abstract: Azo dyes are obtained by continuous diazotization of amines (see Division C2) and further reacting by coupling the diazo compounds obtained. Examples are given in which sulphanilic acid, metanilic acid, and p-chloroaniline are diazotized and coupled with b -naphthol or 1-phenyl-3-methyl-pyrazolone-(5).ALSO:In a process for the continuous diazotization of amines and for the recovery or further reaction of the diazo compounds formed, the reactants are continuously mixed and reacted and the heat of reaction is substantially absorbed by the reaction mixture with a rise in temperature, the diazo compound formed being recovered or subjected to further reaction either with retention or elimination of the nitrogen atoms, e.g. to form azo dyes, hydrazines, phenols or diazonium salts. Specified amines are primary monoamines and polyamines of aromatic character derived for example from benzene, condensed ring systems with 2 to 4 benzene nuclei to which heterocyclic rings may be anellated, heterocyclic compounds and derivatives thereof which contain side chains and/or inert substituents such as carboxylic, sulphonic, hydroxyl, amino and nitro groups, and halogen atoms. Diazotizing agents specified are solutions of nitriles in acids, nitrous acid esters or nitrosyl compounds. Two types of apparatus are described for carrying out the process. Examples are given for the diazotization of sulphanilic acid, metanillic acid, p-chloroaniline and aniline, and for the reduction of the diazo compounds to give hydrazines.
