Abstract: A process for the manufacture of wear-resistant magnetic recording media comprising a dimensionally stable base, a thin ferromagnetic metal layer, containing cobalt and/or nickel, firmly bonded thereto and a thin protective layer applied thereon. The protective layer is produced by treating the recording medium in a liquid basic medium, containing gaseous oxygen, for from 1 to 60 minutes at from 5 DEG to 70 DEG C., washing and drying the treated recording medium and then heating it in air at from 170 DEG to 300 DEG C. This method offers a particularly simple way of providing the ferromagnetic layer of the recording medium with a thin but uniform, mechanically stable and wear-resistant protective layer.

Abstract: Magnetic recording media comprising a non-magnetizable flexible base and a firmly adhering magnetic coating based on a dispersion, containing a silane, of a magnetic pigment in a polymeric binder, and a process for their manufacture. The silane is an aminoalkylsilane RnSi(OR')4-n, wherein n is 1, 2 or 3, R' is alkyl of 1 to 8 carbon atoms and R is aminoalkyl of the formula with one or more primary and/or secondary amino groups and from 3 to 11 carbon atoms. Magnetic recording media comprising a magnetic coating containing such a silane exhibit better abrasion resistance and better electromagnetic properties than comparable coatings.

Abstract: A process for authenticating recording media which are to be safeguarded against falsification and which possess discrete regions of an exchange-anisotropic magnetic material, by comparison of the polarity of a residual magnetization which is left over, because of the exchange anisotropy of the magnetic material, from a predetermined initial magnetization after exposure of the material to a specific temperature cycle and, subsequently, to a magnetic AC field which decreases to zero, with the polarity of a residual magnetization formed in the same way from an opposite initial magnetization, and an apparatus for carrying out the said process.

Abstract: 1,153,453. Magnetic compositions. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA FABRIK A.G. 28 Sept., 1966 [29 Sept., 1965], No. 43247/66. Heading H1H. In the production of magnetic recording media by applying a suspension of ferromagnetic powder in a solution of a linear polyamide on to a backing, the applied layer contains 10-150% by weight (referred to the polyamide) of a soluble condensation product of an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid having 4-22 carbon atoms, and an aliphatic hydroxyamine having at least one primary or secondary amino group, a molecular wt. of below 500, and, e.g., 2-18 carbon atoms. The layer is then dried and heated above the softening point of the polyamide, e.g. at 50-110‹ C. Suitable acids are butyric, caproic, caprylic, capric, lauric, tridecanoic, palmitic, stearic, nonadecylic, sorbic, linoleic, oleic, and sperm or linseed oil fatty acid. Suitable hydroxyamines are 3-hydroxypropylamine, 2-aminoethanol, N - methyl - 2 - aminoethanol, N - hydroxyethyl - 2 - aminoethanol, 2 - aminobutanol, 2- amino - 2 - methyl - propanol, 3 - amino - 2 - hydroxy - propanol, diethanolamine monomethylether, N,N 1 - di - 2 - hydroxyethylethylenediamine, N,N 1 - di - 2 - hydroxyethylpropylenediamine. Equimolar amounts may be used. Suitable polyamide-forming materials, solvents, plasticizers, dispersing agents, and backings are listed. 400-650 pts. by wt. of powder, e.g. acicular γ-Fe 2 O 3 , Fe 3 O 4 , or Fe, may be used per 100 pts. polyamide.
