Abstract: A self contained alarm unit 10 is provided for use in a network 102,120 having a plurality of similar alarm units 10 together with at least one sensor unit 114 for sensing an alarm event, and a remote control unit 104,106. The alarm unit comprises an enclosure incorporating: an audible/visual alert generator; a power supply; a receiver for communication with the sensor unit, another self contained alarm unit, or the remote control unit; a transmitter for communication with another self contained alarm unit or the remote control unit; and a control module for controlling: the alert generator to generate an alert based on an alarm signal being received by the receiver, and to stop an alert based on a disarm signal being received by the receiver; and to control the transmitter to transmit an alert signal in response to an alarm signal being received by the receiver, and to transmit a disarm signal in response to the disarm signal being received by the receiver.
