PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water soluble novel sulfoperoxycarboxylic acid compound useful as an antibacterial agent and a bleaching agent, having storage stability and low odor or no odor, and to provide a preparation method thereof.SOLUTION: A compound represented by the formula I: where Ris a Csubstituted alkyl group and Ris a Calkyl group, or salts thereof, esters or a mixture thereof are provided. A method of preparing the compound includes contacting a non-alpha sulfonated carboxylic acid with an oxidant under acidic pH conditions to produce sulfoperoxycarboxylic acid.

The sulfoperoxycarboxylic compounds have storage stability, water solubility, and low or no odor. Further, the compounds are extracted from non-petroleum-based renewable materials. The compounds can be used as antimicrobial and bleaching agents. The compounds are also suitable for use as coupling agents.
