    Abstract: A button-type battery was designed for elec. and electroinc watches. The cells of RW44 size with a 0.450 in. diam. cathode container and from 0.150 to 0.162 in. high used a 40% KOH + 1% ZnO electrolyte soln. with a Zn gel anode and a seperator comprising an adsorbebt(webril) and a barrier material of polyethylene grafted with methacrylic acid between layers of cellophane. The divalent silver oxide depolarizer was 50-90% AgO, 1% Teflon, and the remainder Ag2O.

    Abstract: A HOLE IN THE TOP OF A BATTERY IS COVERED BY A GAS PERVIOUS, LIQUID IMPERVIOUS MEMBER SECURED TO THE INTERIOR SURFACE OF THE TOP IN A MANNER WHICH PROVIDES A LIQUID-TIGHT CLOSURE AROUND THE HOLE. THE GAS PERVIOUS LIQUID IMPERVIOUS MEMBER MAY BE EXTENDED TO AND AROUND THE EDGE OF THE TOP WHERE IN IS CRIMPED BY THE CONTAINER AND WHERE IT FUNCTIONS AS A GROMMET TO PROVIDE A LIQUIDTIGHT CLOSURE AROUND THE PERIMETER OF THE TOP. THE GAS PERVIOUS, LIQUID IMPERVIOUS MEMBER MAY BE CRIMPED BETWEEN THE TOP AND AN ELECTRICALLY CONDUCTIVE CURRENT COLLECTOR WHICH IS SECURED TO THE TOP. CONSTRUCTIVE ARE ILLUSTRATED IN WHICH THE GAS PERVIOUS, LIQUID IMPERIOUS MEMBER IS ELECTRICALLY NONCONDUCTIVE, WHILE OTHER CONSTRUCTIONS ARE SHOWN IN WHICH THE MEMBER IS CONDUCTIVE.

The surface of the depolarizer mix is treated with a mild reducing solution to form a reduced layer surrounding the mix, and the surface of the reduced layer adjacent to the separator is coated with a layer of silver. The reduced layer surrounding the depolarizer mix in combination with the layer of silver provides improved stability of the depolarizer mix in the alkaline electrolyte and a single voltage plateau during discharge of the cell.
