Re-using the aqueous polymerization medium does not negatively affect the color and mechanical properties of the polymer obtained. The process of the invention results in considerable saving of energy.

[Also in Division C2] A reciprocating plate column for continuously contacting and separating mutually immiscible liquids in countercurrent flow consists of a vertical cylinder 1 with separating chambers 2 and 3 disposed at its upper and lower ends respectively. The column may be made of stainless steel or glass and is surrounded by a cooling jacket. For mixing- purposes there are provided horizontal perforated plates 5 fastened to Vertical shaft 4 and reciprocally movable in a vertical direction. The column is provided with conduits 6, 7, 8 and 9 for the supply of liquids and with overflows 10 and 11 for the removal of the separated liquids. The apparatus is described with reference to the purification of an aqueous solution of a peroxydicarbonate by extraction with an organic solvent and washing of the organic extract with water. When a solvent having a higher specific gravity than water is used, the aqueous peroxydicarbonate solution is supplied through conduit 7, the solvent through conduit 6 and the wash water through conduit 9. Exchange between the phases is promoted by the reciprocatory motion of the plates. The organic solution of the peroxydicarbonate collects in the lower separating chamber 3 and is removed via overflow 10 whilst the wash water collects in the upper chamber 2 and is removed via overflow 11. When a solvent having a lower specific gravity than water is used, the aqueous peroxydicarbonate solution is supplied through conduit 8, the solvent through conduit 9 and the wash water through conduit 6. The organic solution of peroxydicarbonate is then removed through overflow 11 and the wash water through overflow 10. All conduits through which peroxydicarbonate solutions pass are surrounded by cooling jackets.
