Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved system and an improved method of setting image acquisition controls for cameras which set parameters for camera image acquisition apparatus. SOLUTION: The system and the method set parameters for a camera image acquisition apparatus using computer image processing means. As a skilled photographer, an image to be photographed is analyzed and controls are set according to a main theme, thus automatically setting imaging parameters. The system can operate in a full automatic mode which selects the best imaging parameter or in a 'guide mode' which prompts the user to select candidates, if many alternative settings are valid.

Abstract: The present system and apparatus uses image processing to recognize objects within a scene. The system includes an illumination source for illuminating the scene. By controlling the illumination source, an image processing system can take a first digitize image of the scene with the object illuminated a higher level and a second digitized image with the object illuminated at a lower level. Using an algorithm, the object(s) image is segmented from a background image of the scene by a comparison of the two digitized images taken. A processed image (that can be used to characterize features) of the object(s) is then compared to stored reference images. The object is recognized when a match occurs. The system can recognize objects independent of size and number and can be trained to recognize objects that it was not originally programmed to recognize.

Abstract: A system and method for automatic detecting neutral expressionless faces in digital images and video is described. First a face detector is used to detect the pose and position of a face and find the facial components. Second, the detected face is normalized to a standard size face. Then a set of geometrical facial features and three histograms in zones of mouth are extracted. Finally, by feeding these features to a classifier, the system detects if there is the neutral expressionless face or not.

Abstract: This invention defines novel biometrics, called resultant biometrics. These resultant biometrics are a combination of traditional biometrics and some controlled change to the traditional biometric. That is, they are sequences of biometric signals over a short interval of time where the signals are modified according to some pattern. Resultant finger- or palm prints, for example, are consecutive print images where the subject exerts force, torque and/or rolling (controll ed change) over an image acquisition interval of time. The physical way the subject distorts the imag es is the behavioral part of the resultant biometrics, the finger or palm print is the physiological part of the resultant biometric. An undistorted print image in combination with an expression of t he distortion trajectory which can be computed from the sequence of distorted print images, forms a more compact representation of the resultant fingerprint. A template representing the resultant print biometrics is derived from the traditional template representing the finger- or palm print plus a template representing the trajectory. Other traditional biometrics also lend themselv es to temporal modification and are described in the invention.
