A magnetic disc 10 is enclosed in a jacket 12 having an aperture 26, 46, enabling the disc 10 to be rotated by a drive 11 while the jacket 12 remains stationary, and a cleaning material 24, 44 on at least one inner surface effective to wipe the adjacent disc face during rotation thereof. A transducer 17 engages the disc through an elongated aperture 27 and an opposing pressure pad may be applied through a similar aperture 47 in the other side of the jacket. A lamp 13 and a photo-cell 15 are aligned with apertures 28, 48 to detect the passage of holes 19 as the disc 10 rotates. No apertures 28, 48 are required if the jacket is transparent.
