Abstract: A print head has a column of printing elements positioned at an angle between zero and ninety degrees relative to a permitted line of motion of the print head. A first motor is operable for positioning the print head along said permitted line of motion of the print head; A second motor is operable for positioning a first print receivable medium along a line of motion relative to the print head, where the line of motion of the first print receivable medium is normal to the permitted line of motion of the print head; A sensor is operable for detecting an insertion into the printer of a second print receivable medium. A third motor is operable for positioning the second print receivable medium along said line of motion relative to the print head, where the line of motion of the second print receivable medium is normal to the permitted line of motion of the print head. A process is operable for sending first signals translated through a first buffer to the first motor for controlling said first motor, second signals translated through a second buffer to said second motor for controlling the second motor, this signals translated through a third buffer to said motor for controlling said third motor, and fourth signals translated through a fourth buffer to said print head for printing images. Upon no detection of the second print receivable medium by the sensor, and receipt of the data signals, the processor is operable to control portrait mode printing of the images on the first print receivable medium by controlling positioning of the print head along the permitted line of motion of the print head. Upon (1) detection of the second print receivable medium by said sensor, and (2) receipt of the data signals, the processor is operable to control landscape mode printing of the images of the second print receivable medium by controlling positioning of the second print receivable medium along the line of motion of the second print receivable medium.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a display (10) having the capability to emit light and form images viewable from both the front (12) and back (14) of the display. The images displayed are seen from both the front (12) and back (14) of the display (10) and appear differently to the front and rear viewer. Electronic shutters (16, 18) are placed between the display (10) and both the front and rear viewers so that they can be flashed on and off fast enough to provide a stable image appearing to each viewer. The shutters also flash slow enough so that display data can be rewritten to provide each viewer with a correct image. The correct image can be either the corrected image of that image seen by the opposing viewer, or a completely separate image. In this way, simultaneous images appear to both the front and rear viewer. These images can be the same or different even though they appear from the same display (10). The use of electronic shutters on displays emitting light from both the front (12) and rear (14) of the display (10), provide the display with multiple functions not possible on conventional displays.

Abstract: A torsional or rocker switch actuator is described that uses the torsional moment of a buckling compression spring column to rock the actuator member on a pivot. A catastrophically buckling compression column spring is used and the reaction moment which occurs as the spring buckles is applied to rock an actuator back and forth between open and closed positions with cooperating contacts beneath the actuator. A non-teasible, snap action, tactile feedback, key mechanism of extreme mechanical simplicity and high reliability is achieved.

Abstract: Principally useful for keyboard switch data entry devices, the apparatus operates by means of cammed surfaces to produce a generally nutating, rocking snap action. Depression of the key button (1) moves a stem (2) with cam surfaces (9, 10, 11, 15, 16) on it which contact cammed surfaces (6, 7, 8, 14) on a rocking plate mechanism (5). The action produces a first rocking motion in a first axis followed by second and third combined snapping and rocking actions about second and third axes in that plane, but a different angular orientations from the first action. A hypothetical vertical axis constructed through the planar base (12) of the rocking mechanism (5) will nutate or precess in a generally orbital fashion about a central pivot point. The motion of the planar base (12) may be easily coupled to any of a variety of transducer devices which may be contacts, capacitive, optical or inductive.
