Abstract: The data storage mechanism employs a thin, flexible disk having magnetic recording surfaces on both sides and disposed in a carrying envelope. The envelope has an elongate slot in both thicknesses to permit magnetic read/write heads to make contact with magnetic disk surfaces. A pair of pressure pads are disposed on both sides of the envelope, laterally and equally spaced from the read/write head on each side of the envelope; and the pads hold the disk substantially fixed in the direction extending axially of the disk. An eccentric carries the read/write heads so as to swing the heads about a propelling screw therefor and cause one or the other of the read/write heads to move into contact with a magnetic surface of the disk.

Abstract: An enclosure for a pack of magnetic disks including a cover for an assembly of a magnetic disk pack, supporting structure for the disk pack and a screw receivable in a screw threaded opening provided in the upper end of a disk drive shaft. Latching mechanism connects the cover with the disk pack assembly and holds the cover in a detented relationship with respect to the assembly. The latching mechanism includes a first cam which allows the cover to be removed from the disk pack assembly by a continued rotation of the cover in the direction in which the cover is used to move the screw into full engagement with the screw threaded opening in the drive shaft and includes a second cam of a milder slope than the first by means of which the cover may again be moved into latched relationship with respect to the disk pack assembly by a rotation of the cover in the opposite direction without unscrewing the screw from its receiving opening in the drive shaft as the cover is being reapplied to the pack assembly.

Abstract: An optical tool (9) is disclosed which permits a sequence of aligned transducer gaps to be positioned parallel to the axis of a disk file. The tool is surfaced with transparent material (16, 17, 18), has a thickness the same as the disk or disks of a disk stack being simulated and presents an etched alignment grid (17) at the interface surface between transducer and tool. The virtually common plane of the transducer gap and etched grid substantially eliminates parallax and the unfilled etched grid permits the gap to be seen, whether aligned with the transparent unetched surface or the translucent etched surface portion. The use of inclined mirrored surfaces (16) underlying the grid permits alignment to be effected using a bright field microscope and observing from a direction rotated 90 degrees from a line perpendicular to the grid to enable alignment of transducer gaps confronting one another at opposite sides of the disk.
