    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To maximize the data storage capacity of a data storage disk while maintaining the relatively linear addressability of an addressable data storage area on the data storage disk. SOLUTION: The data storage disk is provided with an addressable track independent of the length of disk or helical track rotation and provided with the non-integer pieces of addressable tracks and sectors. Plural rotation bands provided in a radial direction are provided with the fixed number of rotations and the increasing number of the addressable tracks in a band on the outer side of the radial direction of the band. The respective bands are divided into plural rotation groups and the respective groups are provided with the fixed number of the rotations. The respective groups of the band are provided with the same number of the addressable tracks. The respective rotation groups start at an anchor sector 115 fixed at a reference circumferential direction position 100 on the disk and the other sectors of the entire groups are positioned in the circumferential direction of the anchor sector.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a re-writable data storage member (10) comprising a plurality of spaced apart addressable data storage areas (12) for recording and storing data and a plurality of non-data storage areas (15) interposed between adjacent ones of the addressable data storage areas for recording signals not representing data, the storage member being adapted to be scanned in a direction over the storage areas.     Abstract: TU9-90-037 CONTROLLING AN OPTICAL DISK DRIVE USING A MODE SET COMMAND In an optical disk drive, upon each power on or disk receipt, a mode control is set to non-operate, i.e., no commands can be received unless a mode setting command has been received. All other commands are rejected. When a mode set command is received after a power on or after each disk receipt, the mode control is set to operate which allows receipt and execution of legal commands. The mode setting requirement forces selection of write verify or not and to turn laser off or not after a predetermined time delay after completing a last command.

    Abstract: Data recording is self-archiving by non-delete recording combined with a directory that grows with each recording in a manner that all previous recordings related to the respective files or data sets are pointed to in the directory. Non-delete recording is applicable to those record media exhibiting indelible characteristics, such as write-once optical media and to rewritable media, such as magnetic recording media of all types. Each directory entry is identified by file or data set name and has one field for each data segment currently a part of the file or data set. Each field has a pointer to its represented data irrespective of when it was recorded. Each directory entry also points to the entry associated with the immediately preceding recording operation on any part of the file or data set such that data changes can be traced using the directory. The directory is stored in one address end portion of the data storing medium while the data is stored in the opposite address end portion--the directory is preferably at the low addresses while the data is at the high addresses. The directory recording is at ever increasing addresses while the data recording is at ever decreasing addresses.

    Abstract: When beginning the display of material on DVD one of a plurality of video programmes on the disc is automatically selected. A bit is provided on every DVD memory sector header to indicate the type of information contained in the main data portion of the frame A vector of video clips are stored on the DVD and the DVD drive examines the bit and uses a logic device to determine which clip is to be played. Such video clips may include cartoons, commercials, previews and a film or movie, the logic device allowing for random or specific selections to be played at a predetermined time such as during the flipping over of a dual sided DVD. The automatic choosing of a video programs comprises determining a value from the equation Rpick = RANDOM(Npick) (311) where RANDOM is the function for picking a number and Npick is the argument for said RANDOM function; seeking to track number Nzero + Rpick and playing that track (312) where Nzero is a first track containing one of the video programmes.
