    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To actualize a system and a method for constituting service-oriented resources suitable to resource management by media servers, in concrete, the system and the method for the resource management over decentralized media servers. SOLUTION: A different kind of media server is constituted as to same-kind service-oriented resource units called service units 150. The service unit 150 is used to represent resource allocation commitment (not resource reservation) from a specific server capable of supplying a specific media service on demand. The service units relate to different services supported by the media severs and represent envelopes of resource matter needed to supply the services. This method includes the generation of the resource envelopes and additional compensation regarding differences between resource envelopes planned by real resource use frequencies and the service units on the media servers.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an interactive and customizable tour with a guide for part of the world-wide web by dynamically adapting tour navigation options and recommendations according to gathered navigation route information. SOLUTION: The tour is stored in a network data base 430 and referred and retrieved with the identifier 440 of an URL, etc., called a tour ID. A touring server 410 maintains a tour structure, takes out an object in a tour cache 450 in advance, and streams the web object as a tour to a touring client 400. Interactive points including tour navigation options and recommendations regarding dynamic objects are provided according to information on preference, navigation route information on an audience is gathered and analyzed in the tour, and the route navigation options and recommendations are dynamically adapted.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To manage multimedia contents and a resource by managing the number and positioning of replicas related with an object in an internet/Web environment so as to make use of unique characteristics. SOLUTION: An intermediate controller receives requests 601 to 604 including a characteristics object ID from a client and sends them to a positioning module 610 from a request processing module 600. The module 610 applies a positioning policy 615 to the respective requests to generate a set of a temporary positioning inquiry 620 concerning the requests. The module 610, a replica directory service 665 and a replica directory 666 cooperatively find all the replicas related by the object ID of a received request. Further, the module 610, a server directory service 655 and a server directory 656 cooperatively judge the intention of a position for considering the new inquiry 620.

    Abstract: A system providing access to web objects that matches predicted demand for web objects to available capacity on web servers. The system implements methods to dynamically shape both demand and capacity based on certain criteria. The system provides methods to dynamically shape demand for an object based on criteria such as arrival time, incoming geography, and costs requirements. In particular, the present invention characterizes future demand for an object based on aggregation and forecasting of past demand for such object. The system effectively permits control and customization of capacity across one or more media servers based on characteristics associated with the demand across one or more of them, and particularly, based on the dominating geographical traits of past demand. Moreover, the system dynamically shapes capacity by: (a) controlling the number of replicas associated with an object; and, (b) controlling the placement of these replicas across servers in a distributed network. In particular, the system drives capacity shaping measures over a particular object based on its predicted demand. Consequently, the number and location of replicas associated with an object is made to be variable over time and driven by predicted demand for a web object.

    Abstract: A system and method for configuring service-oriented resources is suitable for the resource management in a media server and more particularly, for resource configuration across distributed media servers, expected to be useful and suitable for the next generation of the Internet where, due to virtual proximity, resources are made to appear to be abundant by efficiently managing scattered resources from around the globe. In particular, heterogeneous media servers are configured in terms of homogeneous service-oriented resource units referred to as service units. The service unit is used to represent a resource allocation commitment (as opposed to a resource reservation) from a participating server to be able to provision a particular media service on demand. A service unit is associated with each different service supported by a media server and represents an envelope of resource requirements as needed for provisioning of such service. The method includes generating such a resource envelope, and additionally compensating, at a media server, for differences between true resource utilization and resource envelope projected by a service unit. Additionally, each service unit is associated with a signature which represents metadata used to control access to a service unit by defining rights, privileges, and characteristics of services that can use that particular server unit. The signatures are enforced at the media server.
