Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make an image of unevenness, etc., on a sample surface with good reproducibility and with high accuracy by performing control in a non- contact and stable manner. SOLUTION: Vibration of 1 nm or less is applied to a tip 11 of a cantilever 1, and the distance between the tip 11 and a specimen 10 is feedback-controlled so that a force gradient becomes a constant negative value in an attractive force region where the tip 11 and the specimen 10 interact with each other while the tip 11 is caused to scan a surface of the specimen 10, and an image of the surface of the specimen 10 is made by using a signal of the feedback control.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stabilize a cantilever and to use it in an optimum state by fixing a permanent magnet on the lever tip single surface of the cantilever and arranging it in the magnetic field of a current coil, and setting the bandwidth of a feedback loop higher than the primary resonance frequency of the lever. SOLUTION: A permanent magnet is fixed to one surface of the tip of the lever of the cantilever of a scanning probe, and the magnetic field of the permanent magnet is arranged corresponding to a desired vibration mode being excited in the cantilever. Then, the permanent magnet is arranged n the magnetic field of a current coil (a field coil) and then the cantilever is vibrated with the resonance frequency of the vibration mode by the feedback control of the high bandwidth of current that flows to the current coil, thus the effective stiffness of the cantilever for a force gradient and hence stability can be improved and a greater force gradient can be measured.

Abstract: In one embodiment, a method includes writing a data set to a sequential access medium. The method also includes reading the data set after being written in a read-while-write process to identify faulty encoded data blocks, each of the faulty encoded data blocks including at least one faulty codeword. Moreover, the method includes rewriting a correct version of a first of the encoded data blocks in a first encoded data block set to the rewrite area of the sequential access medium selected from a predetermined subset of logical tracks. The predetermined subset of logical tracks includes D1+D2+1 logical tracks. Only one encoded data block from a particular sub data set is rewritten in a single encoded data block set in the rewrite area.

Abstract: Lateral position of a tape head 108 of a magnetic tape drive is controlled. A first servo signal is determined by reading position marks from a first servo band 114 on a magnetic tape using a first sensor 110 and a second servo signal is determined by reading position marks from a second servo band 114 on the magnetic tape using a second sensor 112. One of the servo signals is delayed relative to the other and an average signal is calculated based on the first servo signal and the delayed second servo signal. Lateral position of the tape head is determined from the average signal and the tape head position is controlled to decrease deviation of lateral position. The delay is based on the frequency of longitudinal oscillation of the magnetic tape 102. Disturbance contained in the delayed second servo signal caused by longitudinal oscillation of the tape will cancel out the disturbance in the first servo signal. The delay can be caused by tilting the tape head and can equal an odd numbered multiple of half the inverse frequency f, e.g. Δt = n/2f ± δ where n= 1, 3, 5, and 0 ≤δ ≤ 1/6f.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide a tape transport control system with enhanced regulation of tape tension and velocity over the entire length of the tape. The tape transport control system comprises of circuitry adapted to output and circuitry adapted to receive one or more signals representing a tape velocity, at least one radius of either the first tape reel or the second tape reel, and a tape tension, and based on the received signals, generate at least one control signal to control at least one of the first reel motor or the second reel motor so as to reduce a tension disturbance at a minimum, one frequency corresponding to a time-varying reel-rotation frequency, based on controller parameters that depend on the tape velocity and on the at least one radius of either the first tape reel or the second tape reel.

Abstract: In one embodiment, a method includes reading a plurality of narrow-spread (NS) codewords from M tracks of a magnetic tape medium using a plurality of read elements, the plurality of NS codewords collectively comprising data logically organized as a predetermined number of two-dimensional arrays. Each two-dimensional array includes a predetermined number of NS codewords positioned orthogonally to a predetermined number of wide-spread (WS) codewords, with a first NS codeword from a first two-dimensional array being read in its entirety from the magnetic tape medium prior to reading a second NS codeword from the first two-dimensional array. The method also includes laterally decoding each NS codeword from the first two-dimensional array read from the M tracks of the magnetic tape medium in succession prior to decoding any WS codewords from the first two-dimensional array. The NS codewords are protected with a stronger encoding than the WS codewords within each two-dimensional array.

The NS codewords are protected with a stronger encoding than the WS codewords within each two-dimensional array. The lower latency from decoding the NS codewords can be used to drive decision-directed digital front-end functions of read channels such as asymmetry cancellation, adaptive equalization, interpolation and gain adjustment.

Abstract: A method includes writing a data set to a sequential access medium. The method also includes reading the data set immediately after being written to the sequential access medium in a read-while-write process to identify one or more faulty encoded data blocks, each of the one or more faulty encoded data blocks including at least one faulty codeword having symbols at least 10 bits in size. Moreover, the method includes rewriting a first of the one or more faulty encoded data blocks within a first encoded data block set to a particular logical track in the rewrite area of the sequential access medium selected from a predetermined subset of logical tracks. The predetermined subset of logical tracks includes D1+D2+1 logical tracks. Only one faulty encoded data block from a particular sub data set is rewritten in a single encoded data block set in the rewrite area.

Abstract: A tape drive-implemented method includes: determining a servo band configuration of servo bands on a magnetic tape, using servo readers on a magnetic tape head to read one or more of the servo bands based on the determined servo band configuration, and using information read from the one or more of the servo bands to position the magnetic tape head relative to the magnetic tape. An array of data transducers is positioned along the magnetic tape head, the array extending perpendicular to a direction of travel of the magnetic tape. Moreover, a group of the servo readers is positioned at each end of the array of data transducers, and a distance between each of the immediately adjacent servo readers in each of the groups of servo readers is less than or equal to one third of a prespecified width of each of the servo bands.
