Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform internal, automatic media sort and random access queueing of media in a media drive assembly arranged in an array of a media storage receptacle. SOLUTION: Each of a plurality of magazines 42 holds many optical disks on a caddie 48. A two-dimensional array 30 of a media receptacle 31 receives the magazine for storage. A plurality of media drives 43 are arranged in the two-dimensional array. Each of the media drives 43 has a plurality of drive ports for receiving the media. Some of the drive ports receive the magazine, while other drive ports receive the media removed from the magazine. Transport of the media from the drive port to a reproduction position of a media reproduction device 55 in the media drive 43 and transport of the media from the reproduction position to the drive port are random access processes. Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To maximize the data storage capacity of a data storage disk while maintaining the relatively linear addressability of an addressable data storage area on the data storage disk. SOLUTION: The data storage disk is provided with an addressable track independent of the length of disk or helical track rotation and provided with the non-integer pieces of addressable tracks and sectors. Plural rotation bands provided in a radial direction are provided with the fixed number of rotations and the increasing number of the addressable tracks in a band on the outer side of the radial direction of the band. The respective bands are divided into plural rotation groups and the respective groups are provided with the fixed number of the rotations. The respective groups of the band are provided with the same number of the addressable tracks. The respective rotation groups start at an anchor sector 115 fixed at a reference circumferential direction position 100 on the disk and the other sectors of the entire groups are positioned in the circumferential direction of the anchor sector.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically reproduce a specific video program stored in a digital video disk(DVD) with a movie by providing a step, etc., for automatically selecting one of plural prescribed video programs or movies at the time of starting displaying of the DVD. SOLUTION: The value of an argument stored in a DVD is read (S308). Next, Ndick being a numerical between 0 and Ntotal is calculated by a microprocessor with a microcode coefficient Nzero as a first track, with Ntotal as the total number of tracks and with Nvideo as the first track of a video (S310). Next, Rpick is calculated by using a prescribed expression (S311). Further, a reading head is sought with respect to a track decided as Nzero+Rpick (S312) to judge the completion propriety of the reproduction of an Nzero+Rpick track (S314). Then, when track reproduction is already completed, the reading head is moved to an Nvideo track (S316) to reproduce read picture data (S318).

Abstract: The present invention relates to a re-writable data storage member (10) comprising a plurality of spaced apart addressable data storage areas (12) for recording and storing data and a plurality of non-data storage areas (15) interposed between adjacent ones of the addressable data storage areas for recording signals not representing data, the storage member being adapted to be scanned in a direction over the storage areas. According to the invention the storage member is characterised in that one of the addressable data storage areas contains first machine readable indicia indicating that the storage member contains data which is not to be changed from any original recording of the data, another of the addressable data storage areas contains second machine readable indicia indicating whether or not the storage member has been erased of data in its entirety, and each of the non-data storage areas contains third machine readable indicia indicating whether or not one of the respective adjacent addressable data storage areas can be written into. The invention also relates to a data storage system comprising a re-writable data storage member as above and to a method of operating such a data storage system.

Abstract: TU9-90-037 CONTROLLING AN OPTICAL DISK DRIVE USING A MODE SET COMMAND In an optical disk drive, upon each power on or disk receipt, a mode control is set to non-operate, i.e., no commands can be received unless a mode setting command has been received. All other commands are rejected. When a mode set command is received after a power on or after each disk receipt, the mode control is set to operate which allows receipt and execution of legal commands. The mode setting requirement forces selection of write verify or not and to turn laser off or not after a predetermined time delay after completing a last command.

Abstract: When beginning the display of material on DVD one of a plurality of video programmes on the disc is automatically selected. A bit is provided on every DVD memory sector header to indicate the type of information contained in the main data portion of the frame A vector of video clips are stored on the DVD and the DVD drive examines the bit and uses a logic device to determine which clip is to be played. Such video clips may include cartoons, commercials, previews and a film or movie, the logic device allowing for random or specific selections to be played at a predetermined time such as during the flipping over of a dual sided DVD. The automatic choosing of a video programs comprises determining a value from the equation Rpick = RANDOM(Npick) (311) where RANDOM is the function for picking a number and Npick is the argument for said RANDOM function; seeking to track number Nzero + Rpick and playing that track (312) where Nzero is a first track containing one of the video programmes.

Abstract: Data-storing disks, preferably each disk having a single spiral track, have addressable tracks that are independent of the length of disk or spiral track revolutions. Each revolution may contain a non-integral number of addressable tracks and sectors. An optical disk is used to describe the invention. The circumferential location of the tracks and sectors precess circumferentially. A plurality of radially disposed revolution bands each contain a fixed number of the revolutions an increasing number of the addressable tracks in the radially outer more ones of the bands. It is preferred that the number of bands be 2n, where n is an integer. Each band is divided into a plurality of revolution groups, each group having a fixed number of revolutions. Each group in a band has a like number of the addressable tracks. A so-called anchor sector has one end anchored to a reference circumferential position on the disk. Each revolution group begins with an anchor sector, all other sectors in the group are positioned circumferentially with respect to the anchor sector. Addressable track seeking, alternate embodiments and fabrication of a disk are described.

Abstract: A large capacity data storing disk includes a volume table of contents (VTOC) which identifies allocated ones of data storage tracks and identification of the data contents therein, indications of unallocated data storage track and an indication of which of the data storage tracks on the large capacity disk surface are unformatted. The indications may also include indications of unallocated "erased" tracks that do not contain data residuals from previous recordings. Those unallocated tracks having such erased condition in a count key data record format (CKD) require a home address record on each of the formatted tracks. The home address record may include indications of rotational position of defects to be skipped over during the recording and readback operations. A specific embodiment of the invention using a magnetooptic record medium is described.
