Abstract: 1,074,417. Data transmission. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Feb. 17, 1966 [April 27, 1965], No. 6938/66. Heading H4P. In a. data transmission system in which n receiving stations are selected to receive a common text, the last station selected is judged to be that most likely to have most errors in the received data. It is arranged that only that station returns error-indicating signals to the transmitter. In the system described a line is seized by a keyboard to ready all the receivers connected to it and a " start of address " signal is transmitted. For each required station in turn there is sent an address and an interrogation signal. If the called receiver is in a condition to receive it returns a ready/not ready signal to the transmitter, where it is printed. When all the stations are selected an " end of address " signal is sent. Data is now transmitted in blocks, with horizontal and vertical parity checks. An " end of block " signal after each block causes the last station which was selected to return a signal, which is recorded at the transmitter, indicating whether or not error was detected. The data transmitted is also recorded, with the return signals, at the transmitter. Finally an " end of text " signal reverts the system to quiescent.
