[Also in Division D1] A device for simultaneously feeding and rotating a wire or like stiff filament comprises two mutually aligned, reciprocable and rotatable feeders each of which includes balls which are urged by cam means into gripping contact with the wire when the feeder is moved in one direction. Two such gripper feeders are shown in Fig. 2 in alignment on a filament 18, each of the sleeves 8, 10, including a set of three balls 26, 28 housed respectively in truncated tapered recesses 34, 36 in the sleeves the balls being spring-urged towards the smaller ends of the recesses. Reciprocation of the feeder 10 causes intermittent feeding of the filament, the feeder 8 serving to prevent any tendency to reverse feeding. The feeding motion is combined with rotation of the filament if the two sleeves are rotated. Apparatus is shown in Fig. 1 in which the sleeve 10 may be reciprocated and both sleeves continuously rotated, the apparatus including a reel 6 of wire mounted in a support 3, 3a so as to be rotatable about its own axis, the support 3, 3a being itself rotatable on pedestals 4, 5 by means of a drive pulley 7. Wire from the reel passes through the sleeves 8, 10 which are mounted to rotate with the support 3a, the sleeve 10 being reciprocated by the mechanism 9, 11, 12, 13. The device is stated to have particular application in the assembly of magnetic cores, in which process thin wire has to be fed through small holes, the rotation of the wire while being fed serving to prevent the wire catching on any rough edges.

    Abstract: A record disk cartridge has a single internal shutter for opening and closing a head access port adjacent a spindle access member in one wall. A further aperture allows the shutter to be actuated to an open position as the cartridge is moved into a playing position. The shutter also brakes the disk against movement when the cartridge apertures are closed. A magnetic coupling enables rotation of the disk inside the cartridge.

[Also in Division H3] Wiring apparatus for a rectangular array of ferrite cores comprises a carriage 11 secured to arms 22 of a base member 24, a cylindrical sleeve 14 rotatably mounted by bearings 16 in the carriage, and a wire laying guide comprising a tubular member 10 having a curved end 12, the tubular member being secured to the rotatable sleeve. Wire from a reel (not shown) is threaded over a pulley 29 mounted on a carriage bracket 27 and is passed through the tubular member, the wire being laid by moving the apparatus in straight lines parallel to the rows and columns of cores in the array. The rotatable sleeve and tubular member 10 enables the curved end 12, which may be flared, to align itself to the direction the wire is being laid. To enable projections to be crossed by the wire, e.g. where a large number of wires have already been laid, the arms 25 supporting the base member are made resilient.
