Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical data memory medium of multiple laminated layers which can be accessed from an optical head and are highly transparent in respective data layers. SOLUTION: The optical recording medium 12 of the multiple data layers consisting of plural substrates 50, 56, 62, etc., separated by air gaps 78 is disclosed. Data surfaces 90, 92, 94, etc., exist on the surfaces of the substrates adjacent to the air gaps. The data surfaces include coatings of optical data recording materials and do not have the reflection layers known in the prior art.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical data storage system with which even data from any data layer of an optical medium consisting of plural data is clearly read. SOLUTION: The optical data storage system suitable to a large capacity of storage is composed of the optical medium having a multiple data surface and a driving device including an optical head. A desired data surface is irradiated with laser beams and reflected light is used as a signal by the driving device. When data in a deep data layer is read, since light has to pass through many layers, a weak signal only is obtained. Consequently, signal intensity is difference depending on the data surface. Respective data surface is optimized so that the signal intensity from each data surface becomes nearly equal by using the medium having a coated dielectric reflecting layer and by suitably selecting the coating material and its thickness. In the preferable embodiment, semiconductor material is stuck onto each data surface and the reflecting quantity is decided by the thickness.

Abstract: The optical data storage system comprises an optical medium comprising two spaced-apart substrates having the same material thickness, each substrate having a data layer. At least one of the substrates has a data layer which is at least partially transmissive. A light source is located near a first one of the substrates. A device directs light from the source to the medium, and includes a device for focusing the light to a discrete number of focusing positions. Each position defines an optical path between the light source and a corresponding one of the data layers. Each of the two optical paths includes a passage through substrate material having a total thickness equal to three substrate thicknesses.

SOLUTION: A multiplex data layer optical recording medium 12 is provided, which consists of a plurality of base boards 50, 56 and 62, etc., which are separated by air gaps 78. Data surfaces 90, 92 and 94, etc., are positioned on the surface of the base board being adjacent to the air gap. The data surfaces include an optical data recording material and are not provided with a reflection layer which is known in conventional technique.
